Loch Lomond canoe trip 09 : This is my second trip to Loch Lomond. As we only have four days to explore, it is very handy as it has a bit of everything and is only spoilt by the litter left by the various revellers. On this trip we were lucky enough to have the Islands pretty much to ourselves though we did bag up four carriers of beer bottles and general rubbish which we took back to shore. A bit pointless? maybe, but we felt like we were doing our bit. The Scots have a massive privilige with their access laws and for it to be abused in such a way is very sad but probably inevitable, especially as Loch Lomond is less than an hour from Glasgow. I plan to head much further north next year, probably up around Inverness where I have spent time white water rafting and mountain biking in the past, but for that to be worthwhile I'll need more than four days to explore. Loch Lomond is only around 5.5 hrs drive from me where as Inverness is another three hours so not really doable for a long weekend. The highlights of the trip for me this time, beside the obvious canoeing, wild camping and scenery, was the wildlife encountered. To see an Osprey hunting every day, right in front of you is pretty special, I also spotted a pine marten. We encountered very challenging conditions on the Loch and feel that my skills have improved greatly. Sadly a father and son died on another loch on the day that we had a tough crossing, the weather really did turn and you must respect these large lochs as they are potentially very dangerous.
